講演題目：Scheduling sports tournaments using operations research in practice
講演概要：Defining a schedule of games is an important problem in the organization of sports leagues. The problem is challenging because many conditions must be taken into account on behalf of different stakeholders, such as league officials, players, television broadcasters, and football fans. Examples of these conditions include stadium availability, travel distances, home and away sequences on consecutive games, fairness, and tournament attractiveness. This seminar will first give a brief overview on sports scheduling, referring to main milestones and data sources from the literature. Then, I will illustrate with real-world cases how the application of operations research has helped decision makers to schedule football tournaments in practice, based on 20 years of experience working with different leagues. In particular, I will outline key aspects incorporated to model and solve scheduling problems of the South American Qualifiers to the FIFA World Cup, and of the national leagues from Argentina, Chile, and Ecuador.
