Introduction to the Journal of the Operations Research Society of Japan (JORSJ)

1. About our Journal
The journal publishes original work and quality reviews in the field of operations research and management science to OR practitioners and researchers in two substantive categories: operations research methods; applications and practices of operations research in industry, public sector, and all areas of science and engineering.

Since 2004, JORSJ only publishes papers in English, while those in Japanese are published in Transactions of the Operations Research Society of Japan (TORSJ), a joint journal of JORSJ. All papers from both journals are refereed under the same criterion by the editorial committee of JORSJ. Instructions are the same for TORSJ except for the language.

2. Submission
Only original, unpublished work that is not in consideration for publication (including accepted and submitted ones) at another venue comprises an acceptable submission. For submissions of a manuscript partially delivered/published (or to be delivered/published) at meetings or in conference proceedings, authors are advised to add a free format supplementary letter that includes the reference, a list of differences between the previous version and this submission, and a copy of the previously published paper. The editor-in-chief will decide if the submission is acceptable for review.

Papers should be uploaded to our online manuscript submission and review system at the following URL.

Operation Manual for Author

Manuscript must be in English and should generally not exceed 25 pages (except for survey papers) typed on one side of A4 or letter size (8 1/2″ x 11″) paper. All pages should be numbered consecutively. In case of a maximum length exceeding 25 pages, authors are required to attach a brief note that explains reasons for the overly long manuscript (e.g. a number of necessary graphics). In this case, the editor-in-chief will decide if the article should be sent for peer review. It should be noted that this page limit does not apply to survey articles submitted to JORSJ.

Title page should have the following information: (i) the title; (ii) the name(s) and institutional affiliation(s) of the author(s); (iii) an abstract of less than 300 words; (iv) keywords. The corresponding author should be shown. The complete mailing address (and e-mail address if any) of the corresponding author should be also given.

3. Format
Authors are requested to prepare a LaTeX file of their manuscript by using the JORSJ style file ejorsj-s2.sty. They also should follow the basic format and other instructions reported in the following example file.

4. Final Manuscript
Final manuscript should be prepared using LaTeX and the above JORSJ style by the authors after receiving the notice of acceptance from the Editor.

Authors may ask the Society to prepare the final manuscript of LaTeX with a charge of JPY4,000 per page.

5. Review Process
In principle, the editor-in-chief will decide acceptance/rejection of a submitted manuscript on the basis of advisement of several referees nominated by the editorial committee. Criteria for acceptance of original articles include (i) originality, (ii) reliability of proof/reasoning, and (iii) appropriateness of proposed theory, wide application, or feasibility of case studies.

Criteria for acceptance of survey articles include (i) references to many different works for a particular theme, (ii) systematic classifications of references, and (iii) academic respect for other fields of study.

Accepted survey articles are thereby expected to make contributions toward the subsequent development of OR.

The review process normally takes 3 months, though it could be shortened to 2 months for re-submitted articles.

6. Resubmission of Rejected Articles
Articles rejected by the journal are not considered for another review process unless a major revision is made prior to resubmission. If authors wish to re-submit such a manuscript, it is advised to submit a supplementary letter that indicates revised sections and accounts for differences from the previous work. The editor-in-chief will decide upon the acceptability of the new manuscript for further review.

7. Copyright
The Operations Research Society of Japan holds the copyright for all materials that it publishes.

8. Page Charges
Corresponding authors who are members of ORSJ are free of page charges.
Page charges must be paid in the case the corresponding authors are non-members of ORSJ for the publication of their papers in TORSJ.

The amount of page charges depends on the page length of the published paper (the fixed amount of JPY 6,000; JPY 3,000 per page for 1-15 pages; JPY 5,000 per page for 16-25 pages). Detailed instructions will accompany the proofs.

It should be noted that this page charge does not apply to invited survey articles submitted to JORSJ.

9. Best Paper Prize
Authors of the best paper selected from among those published in JORSJ and TORSJ for the last one year are awarded ORSJ Best Paper Prize every year, since 2010.
